Library Information

Eligible Users

Chabot and Las Positas College students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use the Library and to borrow its circulating items upon presentation of their College ID card with the current registration sticker on the back. As Chabot College students, you can have books from Los Positas sent to Chabot just for you!

Members of the community are welcome to use the resources inside the library.

Circulation Loan Periods

A limit of 10 items may be checked out of the Library. This limit does not apply to loaner equipment or reserve textbooks.

Circulating Books - 2 week loan period
*Books may be renewed twice unless someone has placed a "HOLD" on the item.
*Books may be renewed in person, over the telephone (723-7513), or via the 
library's catalog. PLEASE NOTE: Unless an instructor places a textbook on reserve, your class textbook will probably not be available in the library. Talk to a reference librarian to confirm the availability of the book you seek.
*You may place a hold on library items in person, by phone (723-7513), or via the 
library catalog. Holds cannot be placed on loaner equipment or reserve textbooks.

Reserve Items- Library Use Only
*Library Reserve Items can be used for 1 hour and they cannot be taken outside of the library. Reserve items include college catalogs, class schedules, dictionaries, etc. A college ID card to check out Reserve items may need to be left at the Circulation Desk.
*Instructor Reserve Items may be used for 2 hours and they cannot be taken outside of the library. A college ID must be used to check out library reserve items at the Circulation Desk.
*AV Reserves - Use your College ID card to view/hear AV items at the AV desk on the Mezzanine. 
*All Reserve items must be returned in person at the Circulation Desk.

Magazines and Newspapers
*Nearly all magazines may be checked out for one week, up to 6 at a time, although we ask that you take only 3 of any one title.
*A few magazines and all newspapers may NOT be checked out of the library. These reserve magazines may be used in the Library for 1-hour at a time by leaving your college ID card at the Checkout Desk.

Reference Books- Library Use Only
*Reference books may be used ONLY in the library. Photocopy machines are available. Photocopies are 10 cents a copy.

Audio-Visual Materials
*The Audio-Visual Center on the mezzanine has DVDs, music CDs, laptops, MacBooks, voice recorders, telescopes, pocket projectors, digital cameras, camcorders, and maps.  Most of these materials may be checked out for home use.  VCR's and DVD players are available in the Audio Visual Center to use materials you can only use in the Library.

Overdue Fines and Lost Item Policy

General Collection - $0.00 per day, per item, beginning on the due date. 

Magazines - $0.00 per day, per item.  

Reserve Textbooks - $.25 per hour, up to the full cost of the reserve item (if a textbook, the actual cost of the brand new textbook).

Audio-Visual Materials - $1.00 per day.  The total fines for an individual item will not exceed $20.00.

Loaner Equipment- Cost of item plus $10 processing fee.

FINES: Fines over $5.00 result in a "block" being placed on a student's record in Admissions and Records.  Fines can only be paid in person at the Chabot College Library during open hours.  Cash or checks accepted.

Lost Book, Audiovisual, Etc.
Patrons must pay the entire cost, plus a $10.00 processing fee for each lost book. Upon repayment, the patron will be issued a receipt. If the item is found within ONE YEAR, the patron will receive a refund for the amount of the item, minus the $10.00 processing fee.

Damaged Books that Must be Replaced  Patrons who damage materials beyond the capability of the library to repair the item are subject to the same fees as for lost books. Patrons may opt to replace the book in lieu of the replacement fee.

Interlibrary Loans
Chabot College Library and Las Positas College Library share one online catalog database. Items are easily requested and transferred between the two libraries. If you need to request a book from the Las Positas Library, ask at the Circulation Desk. Book shipments arrive two to three days after requested.
